Secondly, Costa Rica's commitment to biodiversity and conservation aligns with the growing global interest in integrative and natural healthcare approaches. Ranked #1 in the 2023 Happy Planet Index, the country's rich ecosystem provides a unique setting for studying botanical medicine, zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, food safety and security, vector-borne diseases, environmental health, chronic diseases, mental health, and eco-therapy. This offers students a chance to explore alternative healing methods and deepen their understanding of the interplay between nature and health, a subject that is known today as One Health.
Furthermore, Costa Rica's diverse population and range of medical challenges create a dynamic learning experience. From urban general hospitals to over 1000 primary care units (EBAIS) spread out in rural communities, students can gain insights into a wide spectrum of health disparities, infectious diseases, and cultural influences on healthcare practices. This exposure fosters adaptability, empathy, and cross-cultural competence—essential qualities for future healthcare leaders and highlighted objectives in our Study Abroad Learning Experience.
